A Guide to Buying Your First Baby Stroller

A lot of new parents experience a combination of fear and excitement. It’s exciting, true, but this all new sensation of caring for a child can be seriously intimidating, too. You want the best for your baby, but you don’t exactly know where to start.

It’s not enough to just throw money around and buy the most expensive items available. You want quality, and a high price tag doesn’t always offer the best quality possible. What you want to be, of course, is a smart shopper. You need to know what to look for before you head out to the shops and drown from the myriad of stroller choices.

There are several things you have to consider when buying your child’s first stroller. First of all, take a look at the brakes. Since strollers should offer both comfort and safety, a powerful working brake is crucial in keeping your child safe. Make sure the brakes are easy to work with, will respond quickly, and can be reached in a pinch.

Second, check out the seatbelts. It may seem like a minor thing, but seatbelts protect your child from sudden stops and other possible accidents. Make sure that the seatbelts are adjustable to ensure comfort. Unlike adult seatbelts, children are best protected by a five-point harness that will remain comfortable even as it offers full security.

Third, test the strollers manoeuvrability. You will probably be navigating with one hand occasionally, so test to make sure that the stroller will respond quickly and easily. Take note that this is actually related to the wheels. If you commonly have to go through rough terrains, an all-terrain stroller or one with three wheels may be best for the job.

Fourth, see is the seat is adjustable. Traditional prams usually have the child fully reclined and facing you. A lot of modern strollers now include adjustable seats that can recline fully and swivel towards you. This allows you to adjust the seating as it pleases you. A full recline also gives your child the opportunity to nap even while travelling with you.

Fifth, make sure that the hood or canopy is fully functional. A darker canopy protects your child from the sun, rain, and wind. It allows your child to rest comfortably within, regardless of the elements outside. It’s best to make sure that they canopy can be properly adjusted.

Sixth, look for additional storage. Travelling with a child is quite problematic, what with the nappies and the milk bottles you have to lug around. A lot of strollers these days offer additional storage underneath the chair, so make sure you get one with ample space for your other items.

Finally, look for a safety certificate. This ensures that the item you purchase is safe and reliable. It also lets you know if there was a product recall concerning the model of your choice.

Buying Baby Clothing

If you’ve recently become pregnant you may be wondering how many items of baby clothing you’ll need to be prepared for your baby’s arrival. It is definitely more likely that the more that is done before your baby comes, the more relaxed and comfortable the parents will be. -

The last thing a new mother is wanting to do, is to spend her day out shopping with a tiny new baby. Even if the baby is very happy and sleepy it’s not ideal to be driving around shopping. Childcare is an option but for such a new one, many mothers will still be breastfeeding and find it difficult to stop what they are doing every two hours or the option of expressing in between feeds can be exhausting. Some babies dirty up their clothes faster than others. If your baby suffers from anything like reflux they will sometimes vomit on their clothes more than other babies. While some mothers feel their baby gets vomit on them more often anyway! Your baby may be fine in one outfit for the day and a fresh one after bathtime for the night, other babies will need 3-4 outfits a day. So if you base your estimate on somewhere in between you may feel comfortable having 10 suits in a particular size and only need to wash a couple of times a week.

So small and delicate, they’re adorable and hard to resist. However, your goal should be to fill your baby’s drawers with practical new born baby clothes and avoid items that could potentially make your baby uncomfortable or girls baby clothes / baby boy clothes that are a waste of money . You also need to consider softness, durability, and safety; at this age, style should be the last thing on your mind.

Preemie baby clothing are especially irresistible there’s no doubt. But when you actually use some of it, you’re left wondering how anyone thought it was the least bit useful. Have you purchased premature baby wear that turned out to be a huge waste of money either because they didn’t fit right or because they just weren’t practical.

Manufacturers and designers know that babies clothes are hard to resist – and they know that you want to clothe your baby in the very best.
But here’s the thing, your baby will grow so fast – and sleep so much – that all those tiny versions of grown up clothes will go to waste; it’s like throwing money out the window.
Save the designer purchases for later on when your baby has grown a bit and will be able to wear them for a longer period of time. Hand knitted baby clothes tend to be more practical at this stage and definately more personal as a gift.

The first six to ten weeks of a premature baby’s life requires a few key pieces of baby clothing. While it’s always tempting to buy every piece of clothing you see it’s entirely unnecessary. Also you probably have friends and parents that are

first – you need to get organised. Storing all these new baby clothes can get overwhelming really quick if you don’t have a game plan in place when you start. Don’t feel as though you have to use – or accept – every hand-me-down item that is given to you. While you will save a significant amount of money by using hand-me-down baby clothes, it will only serve to make you more anxious if you run out of room to store all the baby clothes.

Use a checklist of newborn clothing essentials to help get you through the first 8 weeks of your new baby’s life. While the list we’ve created seems small, we recommend that you purchase duplicates of the items, thus reducing the amount of time you will spend doing baby laundry in those first precious (and sleep-deprived!) weeks.

Although it’s easy to find preemie sizes in a baby clothes shop or on websites, not all clothes will work for every premature baby. A baby’s size, condition, and medical equipment all play a role in what preemie clothes he or she can wear.

Crocheted hats: Hats are a must in the ICU, even for very small or very sick preemies. Covering the head helps babies stay warm, and preemie hats are an easy knitting or crocheting project.
Nappy covers: Even the smallest and sickest ICU patients can wear a colorful cover over the diaper.
Crocheted booties: Although it can be hard to keep booties on tiny feet, they are adorable and can be worn by even very small babies with complex medical conditions.
Bodysuits: Bodysuits, like Gerber Onesies T, can be worn by stable babies without umbilical lines, whose skin is fully developed.
Sleepers: One-piece pajamas with long sleeves and feet are wonderful for babies who are transitioning from a warm incubator to an open crib. Sleepers are easiest to use when they snap up the front, as monitor cords can be threaded out between the snaps. Zippers are harder to work with.

How to Wash Preemie Clothes
Preemies have sensitive skin and delicate respiratory systems, and strong odors or harsh chemicals may cause allergic reactions. Preemie clothes should be washed in warm or hot water, in a smoke free environment, using detergent that is perfume and dye free. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets should not be used. Preemie clothes should always be washed before wearing to remove dust and ensure cleanliness.

Crocheting or knitting for babies can be a wonderful way to show your love for the preemies in your life. Whether you are knitting a set of hats for a loved one who is expecting or making preemie quilts to donate to your local ICU. However for those not able to crochet or knit baby clothes you can always shop for baby clothes and instead of buying the usual commercialised clothes buy something more personalised like babies crochet or dresses for newborn babies

Baby Clothes – give baby the very best

Becoming a new mom or dad is exciting in and of itself. And when it comes to parenting, there is so much to remember. It goes without saying that a baby must be provided with basic needs. But for most new parents, making sure baby has the best of everything becomes a top priority. As such, many parents are in search of high quality baby items that don’t break the bank. One of the most popular concerns for new parents is baby clothes. Babies are adorable — and cute baby clothes only seek to ‘up’ the adorability factor. That said, celebrity babies are among the best dressed in the world, which lends to the fact that most celebs are of the belief that every baby deserves to be well dressed.

It goes without saying that baby clothes should be comfortable and cozy. Little ones usually have more sensitive skin than do adults. This means that it’s vitally important clothing does not bind, rub, or irritate that baby soft skin. In the world of baby fashion, high-quality clothing that’s made specifically to accommodate the body of a tiny person and skin that is often sensitive is of the utmost importance. The best baby clothing designers put time and effort into assuring that every garment is perfect.

So, where do new parents turn for inspiration in baby fashion? Celebrity parents, that’s where. Celebrity children are decked out in only the best at all times. Most new parents find that a short stint of “celebrity watching” will reveal what celebrity babies are wearing. Parents can typically rest assured that the clothing they see on the children of famous people is the best the world of baby fashion has to offer.

Not only do mini-celebs look fashionable, but they’re comfortable and the clothing they wear is durable. When considering baby clothes, parents want their kids to look good, but they also want clothing to last. For babies who have reached the crawling stage, high quality durable clothing is a must. Some baby clothes are even equipped with extra padding in the knees to help protect baby’s skin while crawling. Durability in baby clothing is also a must because of frequent washing. Babies routinely spit up, spill things, have the occasional diaper blow outs, and can be generally messy. As a result, most parents find themselves doing more laundry than they ever thought possible. Because baby clothes often require frequent washing — it’s important that they be durable.

So, to sum things up — parents who want only the best in terms of baby clothing can turn to celebrity parents for inspiration. They should also seek clothing that is comfortable and designed to accommodate baby’s sensitive skin, and that comfort should not come without style. Comfortable and stylish baby clothes are available through some of the most prominent celebrity fashion designers. And, in addition to everything else, parents should seek baby clothing that is durable and can withstand the rough-and-tumble world of a child, as well as the frequent washing that is basically inevitable in the world of baby-dom.

Forty-Two Pairs of Shoes

My granddaughter was born to a closet full of clothes, a toy box full of toys and, forty-two pairs of shoes.
Everyone talks about pending baby births with happiness and excitement as they await the arrival. When it is a girl, in our ‘have’ society, we focus on the many, many cute items that can be purchased, much more so than for boys. So we tend to overdo it and buy way too much. In my granddaughter’s case, so much, that it became a daily challenge to ensure she wore all of the clothes and shoes before she grew out of them. There was a subtle, continuous type of pressure on her parents to make sure all the clothes and shoes were worn, at least once. And these were the items that had been opened at the baby showers, sorted and stored away. When I first saw the inventory of goods, there were still several gift bags full of items yet to be sorted and stored.
My mother, born 10 years before the Great Depression, was amazed to meet my granddaughter for the first time and to see what she was wearing – blue jeans, t-shirt over a long sleeved t-shirt, striped socks and a pair of leather boots – at 3 months old! She has mentioned to me several times since, how her children, when they went out, were usually dressed in a sleeper (common baby wear during that time), as much due to lack of available selection as the fact mothers were too busy to spend precious time dressing up their babies. That was her world as a mom, a significant difference between these two generations, approximately fifty years apart.
The selection available to my granddaughter’s parents, at first, made me very uncomfortable. I was slightly alarmed (and so were they) at what could be viewed as excess – imbalance between the volume of clothes and shoes their daughter received and the complete inability for her to appreciate any of it.
Then I read an article in the national newspaper about baby girls in China.
I was reminded about their culture, primarily in the rural areas, of attempting to conceive and birth only boys. Their solution for the situation when a girl is born is to either kill her or, at the very least, abandon her. My immediate response of revulsion and anger was replaced with a deep sadness that any society would feel their survival was dependent upon the birthing of boys, only boys. Their culture seeks out heirs and strong family workers, both roles not open to young girls. In later life, the girl becomes more and more expensive to keep and incurs further costs when dowrying her at marriage. To our society, these are not acceptable reasons for this cultural form of genocide, we cannot imagine living in a society that would allow, and even encourage, this horrific practice.
One of my friends adopted one of these thousands of abandoned baby girls – a few years ago. Her new daughter came to her family with nothing – certainly not forty-two pairs of shoes. But the joy she has brought to their household cannot be measured and she is now firmly entrenched in her new society and continues to be welcomed, and adored, by everyone she meets.
So what about the forty-two pairs of shoes? Do they symbolize a culture of excess or a culture of love?
First of all, this trend of registering for baby shower gifts, holding large baby showers, and; buying for others at the level they either bought, or will buy, for us and our new babies is a part of our culture. We accept that we are going overboard but we do it anyway.
Second of all, we know the baby and her parents will never use all the items they receive, but we still overbuy. After all, who can turn away from those cute little reboks or nikes? Again, this is a part of our culture that our children are a ‘fashion’ reflection of ourselves. They have to look good.
However, I submit, although these actions are part of our culture, it is really not about the material possessions, what we can afford to buy and provide for our children. It is really not about image, how the parents present their child to the world. It is not really at all about the number of shoes. It is about the fact that we are able to do this, that we have the wherewithal to provide these material things to our children. We want them to have the best, we want our children to be showered with gifts, to demonstrate our love and caring, not only for them, but for the parents who gave birth to them.
Although we as a society may welcome our new little girls with material things, we are blessed to be able to do this. We should continue to celebrate their arrival in whatever ways we wish. After all, it is about celebration of their arrival not about excess. And no matter how many or how few pairs of shoes await their arrival, they are surely worth so much more.
